Our Mission:

I wanted to put in one place what I think might be helpful for us as United Methodists to begin to understand better the ministry and mission of our denomination. If we better understand our ministry and mission it is my hope that we will begin to embrace it as our own.  My hope is that we can claim the name United Methodist with a sense of pride. The following is the Mission statement of the denomination, of the Maumee Watershed District and of our own local church (with a statement added by me)

First, the Denomination:

            We are the people of the United Methodist church

• We believe in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world
• We live by two kinds of holiness
• personal
• social
• We follow three simple rules
• do no harm
• do good
• stay in love with God
•  We work in four areas of focus
• developing leaders
• creating places for new people
• elimination poverty
• improving health globally

Maumee Watershed District:

• Our Mission: To help congregations and community ministries make disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the world
• Our Vision: We follow 3 simple rules: Do no harm, Do good and Stay in love with God
• Our Desires: To be scripturally sound, to be culturally relevant, to be interconnected, interdependent and outreaching.

            Our Focus:  We work in four areas of focus

• developing leaders
• creating places for new people
• eliminating poverty
• improving health globally

Portage Christ:

            As a congregation our mission is to be:
                        Christian servants, United in Mission to the Church and World

            We live out this calling through Five practices of fruitful Congregations

• Radical Hospitality
• Passionate Worship
• Intentional Faith Development
• Risk-taking Mission and Service
• Extravagant generosity
