LENTEN SOUPAND SALAD SUPPER AND STUDY
Lent is a season that spans 40 days not counting Sundays.  The origin of Lent began in the early centuries of the Christian faith, as a final time of fasting and preparation for new converts, before their baptism into the faith on Easter.  As time passed it became an invitation for the entire church to observe.  Lent has become for Christians a season of intentional penance, fasting and introspection for each to journey at a personal level.   It is a time of reflection of reacquainting ourselves with the work of god’s spirit in our lives.  The ideal and hope is that every Christian will move sacrificially through this season and arrive at the Easter celebration with a renewed vitality of faith, in light of our resurrected Christ.

Consider this your invitation!  We are going to gather on the Thursdays of Lent for soup, salad and study.  This will begin on Thursday February 18th and continue through Lent.  The gatherings will be informal and will begin at 6:30pm as we eat together and study together while we share the meal. Our time will end around 7:30pm.  Our theme for discussion and study is to look at the agenda that Jesus announced at Nazareth would be his ministry focus.  I anticipate sharing food and dialogue with all who decide to take this journey.

Themes for our supper and study:

February 18th

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because God has anointed me - Luke 4:18a

February 25th

God has sent me to announce “good news” to the poor - Luke 4:18b

March 4th

To proclaim release to the captives/prisoners - Luke 4:18c

March 11th

and  recovery of sight for the blind - Luke 4:18d

March 18th

to let the broken victims go free - Luke  4:18e

March 25th

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor (Jubilee) - Luke 4:19

30-Hour Famine
The 30-hour famine is a program from World Vision that awakens people to the problem of hunger.  The Christ Youth Fellowship will be participating with other youth to commit to going 30 hours without food --- and raise money as well as awareness around hunger issues.  Every $30.00 raised can help feed and care for a child for a month. Be looking for youth ready to take your generous donation.  The 30-hour famine will be the weekend of February 19, 2010.
