Portage Recycles!

The Portage Recycling Site is going strong.  For those of you who forgot or haven’t heard for some reason;  Every 3rd Saturday of the month the Portage Lions Club collects a trailer full of recyclable glass, paper, plastic and cans. Items accepted at the site are:

  • Beverage Cans
  • Steel Cans
  • #1 and #2 Plastic Bottles
  • Glass Jars and Bottles
  • Newspaper
  • Telephone books
  • Magazines
  • Scrap Aluminum & Foil
The trailer is located in the parking lot of the Portage American Legion (behind the post office), on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from 9am to Noon.

How to Prepare & Separate Your Recyclables

Not all materials are recyclable, nor can we accept all recyclable materials.  So please follow these simple rules for what to recycle and how to separate and/or prepare it for recycling.

  • Scrap Aluminum & Foil should be rinsed clean and separated from aluminum cans.
  • Newspaper should be stacked in paper bags or bound with string (you do not need to remove inserts).
  • Phone Books should have their covers removed.
  • Magazines & Catalogs should be free of plastic wrappers and product samples.
  • Plastic Bottles should be rinsed clean and have their caps removed.  Only #1 PETE and #2 HDPE bottles can be accepted.
  • Steel Cans should be rinsed clean and have any paper labels removed.  Loose lids should be pinched inside the can.
  • Glass Jars & Bottles should be separated into Clear, Green and Brown.  No window glass, mirrors, Pyrex or light bulbs.
  • Beverage Cans both aluminum and bi-metal cans are accepted.  They need not be separated, but should be drained and flattened to save space.
