Vic's Way

[Old Gotthardpass Road]
The old Gotthardpass road

The old Gottardpass road is paved with cobblestones. You can go faster on the new road, but the old one is more interesting.

[cows on the road]
Local traffic

The traffic is more interesting too, but watch out for the slippery spots.

[View from Sustenpass?]
View from Sustenpass?

I think this picture was shot from Sustenpass, northwest of Andermatt. I'm not sure. It was somewhere along my way that day.

[Hotel at Furka Pass]
Hotel at Furka Pass

Furkapass road winds around the Belvedere Hotel. An edge of the Rhone Glacier is behind us, across the parking lot from the Belvedere. There you can walk inside the glacier, into a shimmering, blue cave.

[Headwaters of the Rhone]
The headwaters of the Rhone

The Rhone River begins at the Rhone Glacier. It flows west through Switzerland until it expands into Lac Léman (Lake of Geneva) and reforms itself at the southwest corner of the lake—at Geneva. The river then continues its westerly course into France before turning south at Lyon for its final run to the Mediterranean.

That's Furkapass road to the left of the Rhone.

[Momento from Grimsel Pass]
A momento from Grimsel Pass

I don't have any pictures of Grimsel Pass, but I do have a momento: a letter from Switzerland officially reiterating that I had überschreitened der Höchspeedlimit by um 21 km/h on Grimselpassstrasse. This transgression cost me 500 Swiss Francs—slightly less than $300 at current rates. They accepted Visa when they pulled me over.

2% of America's population is in US jails for drug related offences. I've heard that 2% of the world is in Swiss jails for speeding without a credit card.
