On Sunday, 3 September 2000, Kathleen and I headed from Bowling Green, Ohio, to Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Our destination was Nice, France, and from there a little town named Valbonne. This was the beginning of a 12 day motorcycle tour through the Alps. We would end up in Sauerlach, Germany, just south of Munich, and fly back from Munich to Detroit.
We were riding with Edelweiss Bike Travel. Edelweiss had made all the arrangements. They would pick us up and take us to the airports. They had chosen the hotels we would stay in. They would carry our luggage from one hotel to the next, furnish us meals morning and night, and make wonderful picnic lunches on our "rest" days. And, last but not least, they had a nice new BMW R1150 GS for me to ride.
Our tour group consisted of some 30-odd people from all over the USA: New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, California, Washington, and Hawaii. Most, like Kathleen and I, were riding two up.
The map shows our main route. Others took slight variations, though we all stayed in the same hotel each night. On rest days we did more riding, but those excursions are not shown on the map.
