Volunteers Needed for the January Concert
So far, there are two parent volunteers to assist with the black dresses and
tuxes for CB; however, we could use 1 or 2 more adults, particularly parents
willing to work with the gentlemen's tuxes. Please let Mrs. Hann know if you
would be willing to help.
Student Leadership Workshop with Dr. Tim
On Tuesday, November 11, several section leaders from Concert Band and Symphonic
Band attended the annual Student Leadership Workshop at Whitmer HS in Toledo.
Led by Dr. Tim Lautzenhiser, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, the
students, Mrs. Hann and Miss Swartz, our BGSU student teacher, had a inspiring
time. Thanks to the Band Boosters for providing the means for us to attend!
Private Lessons
Any band student can benefit from individual attention on their specific
instrument. In Bowling Green we are incredibly fortunate to have a number
of qualified professionals to assist our students - all it usually takes is
an email or a phone call!
All Concert Band parents received a mailing containing phone numbers and
addresses for teachers for any instrument; we will reproduce that list and
have it available at school very soon for all of our students. If you are
interested in performing a solo at the Solo & Ensemble Contest, get busy!
The performance date is Saturday, January 31, but the entry forms are due
over the holiday break.

Getting Your Instrument into Shape!
As marching season is ending, this is great time to schedule instrument
maintenance for your personal instruments. The band directors regularly
send in the school-owned equipment, but all instruments need some care.
Just like the family car, regular good habits and consistent maintenance
will improve the instrument's ability to function efficiently.
You may recognize this list from elementary school, when your student began
playing - the instrument needs "common sense" care for as long as your student
uses it. I spend a few hours at the Rettig store on Airport Highway the other
day. Many parents and students came in, several for repairs. Most of those
could have been avoided with a little "TLC"!
Here is a quick look at what each instrument needs:
FLUTE: Usable, clean handkerchief and cleaning rod. Check pads
for excessive wear. Avoid storing any "junk" in the cases.
CLARINET: Have 3-5 "good" reeds on hand at any given time; use
a reed holder. Cork grease. Wash mouthpiece in lukewarm water and mild soap
- regularly! "Step-up" mouthpiece, preferably a Portnoy BP02 – available at
school. Check pads and corks for excessive wear. Avoid storing any "junk" in
the cases.
TRUMPET / TROMBONE: Valve oil (trumpet) or slide cream (trombone).
Water bottle, preferably distilled water (trombone). Wash mouthpiece regularly
- especially after a cold or flu! Bath entire instrument several times a year
using lukewarm water and mild soap. Use the "snake" to clean all slides. And,
as with all instruments, avoid storing "junk" in the cases.

Stadium Blankets
Need a gift idea? The Band Boosters are selling Stadium Blankets for $35. If
you would like to buy one for yourself or that hard to shop for person on your
list, contact Diane or Steve Wensink at 419-669-2538.
Kroger Gift Certificates
For those of you who shop at Kroger on a regular basis, why not do it with gift
certificates? This helps the band and doesn’t cost you anything extra. Here’s
how it works: You purchase one or more gift certificates for $25 each, and use
them at any Kroger store just like regular money. You’re not out anything and 2%
of the sale of each certificate purchased can be applied to individual trip accounts.
Everybody wins.
Certificates may be purchased at the Deutschman residence, 911 N. Wintergarden Rd,
at the following regularly scheduled times:
Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 pm
Saturdays, 10:00-11:00 am
This is any easy fundraiser that is easy on your pocketbook. So don't wait, start
earning money for the band and your trip account today!
Little Caesar Pizza Kits
The band will be selling Little Caesar Pizza Kits again this year in time for the
Super Bowl. The proceeds from the first 3 items sold will go into the general
fund to cover our budget obligations. The proceeds from the sale of items beyond
the original 3 will be applied to student trip accounts.
The sale will run from Jan 6-12, 2004 with delivery on Jan 20th. We have done
this fundraiser before, and it has done very well in the past.
Band Store Debts
Many thanks to all the students who have paid their "debts" to the HS Band Store.
We are very grateful to the Band Boosters for supplying our store so that our
students always have a convenient way to but supplies.
Some of our students are in the habit of signing out supplies but NOT paying in
a timely fashion - for those students their grade cards were held this month.
The "debt" list is posted in numerous places throughout the band room - if your
student did NOT receive grades for the first 9 weeks, check with them. Many of
these debts date from Band Camp in August, when students needed flip folders and
lyres. We are following school policy, similar to the holding of grades for
overdue library books.

Scotland Trip Q&As
From Parent Meeting 11/12/03
-
How do we sign up to chaperone?
Submit a green card and sign the list.
-
When are we contacting the private schools?
As soon as those students enroll as students in the BG public system.
-
Price of passports?
16 and older $85.00
15 and under $70.00
-
Price of "add-tos"?
A supplemental amount "to be decided".
-
Number of performances?
Flexible at this time
-
Price for young siblings?
More than "students and chaperones"; less than "add-tos".
-
Why not charter airlines?
Safety - Youth Music doesn't use them.
-
What about the 18-21 crowd, how much do they pay?
Same as other "add-tos".
-
Are families on the same flights?
Yes
-
Why 8 days? Why not shorter?
2 of those days are travel days, the parades/performances are certain days, etc…….
-
Are there "general fund'“ fund raising opportunities?
Yes
Are there "individual" fund raising opportunities?
Yes
-
How are meals arranged?
A set number are included, usually breakfasts and dinners. The itinerary
will list exactly how many meals are "on our own". The hotel meals are
usually buffets. Often the lunches are "fast food" or other stops as we
are sightseeing.
-
Any special breaks for families with multiple children on the trip?
Yes - as funds are available, we make every attempt to find "breaks" for
those families. Those opportunities - if available - will come off the
final payment.
-
How will we know our student's individual progress in fund raising?
Your student's account balance will appear in every monthly newsletter,
listed by student ID #.
-
Can siblings contribute to each other's fund raising?
Yes
-
Can "add-tos" arrange for extra days in Scotland?
No
-
What is your estimate of the spending $ that each student should bring?
Factor in number of meals @ approx. $10.00, how many souvenirs, film,
etc. your student may need. $200-300 should suffice, unless your student
intends to do a lot of shopping!
-
Should the students bring debit cards?
There are mixed opinions among travelers regarding debit cards. More
information later.
-
Should students have credit cards?
Sometimes this will provide the best exchange rates. Some companies offer
a "student card" that you guarantee, BUT that is of a much lower rate than
you (as parents) carry.
Always check with your own company regarding their policies. Be sure to
notify your company if you/your student is traveling out of the country
- a safety feature for you.
-
How will we "get around" in Edinburgh?
Motor coach (bus), or on foot. There are no subways in Edinburgh.
-
Will the Board of Education approve this trip?
As per your earlier information: after January 5, 2004, if there are enough
"yes" votes and enough chaperone volunteers, then the Board will be approached
at the January 2004 meeting. Based on our prior experience, we feel that they
will be positive to our trip proposal if supported by a majority of the Band
Families.
The Board of Education approved a summer 2004 trip to France for the French
students; however, they didn't get enough students to go.
-
How will we handle lost luggage?
We have been MOST fortunate to not have had much experience with this on our
two previous European trips. We'll do our best, working with the airlines,
should this happen.
-
Can we take video cameras on board?
Yes, we think so.
-
How is the security in the hotel rooms?
Common sense needs to rule here - not in any city, domestic or foreign, should
one leave valuables out in plain sight in a hotel room! We will Investigate
the hotel safe/ valuable storage.
-
Will we travel with medical personnel?
It has been our practice - and our good fortune- to have had parents with
formal medical training who wanted to travel with us. Usually we have RN's,
LPN's, EMT's and occasionally an MD with us.
-
Will we go outside of the city of Edinburgh?
Yes
-
How will we deal with medications/prescriptions?
Very precisely! There will be detailed forms to complete closer to the time
of departure.
