November 2001
Vol 5, No 2

Cookie Dough

Frozen cookie dough will be available for pickup at the BGHS band room on Wednesday, November 14, beginning after school until 6:00 pm. It is very important that you make arrangements to pick up your orders during that time.

HELP – We need parents to work shifts for pickup that day. Shifts are from 2:00–4:30 and 4:30-6:30. We need 12 people each shift to make cookie dough delivery and pickup run smoothly. If you can help at one of the shifts, please call Shirlee Bostdorff at 352-3381 or email at sbost@wcnet.org

Thank you!!

Please let me take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has made this marching season such a success. The Bobcat tradition of a great marching band continues not only because of our talented musicians, but also because of the support that we receive from the parents and friends of the band. Even with the less than ideal weather, you showed your support by working in the concession stand or traveling to away games as chaperones. You supported the fundraisers and donated treats so that our children would have a more enjoyable experience in the Bowling Green High School Marching Band.

I would especially like to thank the McClanahan family (*Queen Peggy*) for popping corn at all of the games and to Steve & Cindy Puffer for grilling porkaleans again this year.

Thanks to the other members of the concession committee for making my job easier this season. (I finally got to see my first home game from the bleachers in three years.) Last but not least, a big thank you and a job well done to Lisa Shuler and her many helpers for putting over 200 students in uniforms and making them look so good. I know from experience how much time these ladies put in to the job, starting way before band camp and continuing through the Holiday Parade, and then again in the spring for the Memorial Day Parade. They handle over 1200 pieces of uniform each year and somehow are able to keep track of them all.

Thank you to the directors for running such a quality program. I am sure the rest of the year will be just as enjoyable.

Scott Shuler
President, Band Executive Board

Uniforms

Marching band season is over, but we still have a couple of parades to go this school year. Please remind your son or daughter to bring home their band shirts and gloves for laundering and their shoes for cleaning (those little scrubbing bubbles work wonders). They will need these for the holiday parade on November 17.

Many students borrowed band shirts this season, and they were never returned. If you have one, please return it to the band room. Thank you.

Band Web Site

The Bobcat Band web site can be found at: home.dacor.net/BGHSband

The site features photo galleries (including pictures from the Paris trip), recent newsletters, a listing of officers, and the band schedule.

We would like to update the photo gallery and are looking for photos from this band season to add. We are especially interested in pictures from the September 14 halftime show with the Anthony Wayne Marching Band.

If you have pictures, you can email them to bghsband@dacor.net, or contact Jay and Anne Deutschman at 354-3014. We will scan them and return them to you.

Check out the web site and if you have suggestions for items to be posted, please let us know.

Wooster College Band

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Wooster College Band will be stopping in Bowling Green on their spring tour on March 9, 2002. It is quite an honor to have this quality of band visiting. A few years ago, this group hosted the BGHS Marching Band and it is now our opportunity to return the favor. They will giving a concert in the BGJHS auditorium.

We will be needing volunteers to help both house and feed the students. The Presbyterian Church is kindly offering their activity room for the evening meal. Housing for that night will be needed. The students will be assigned in pairs per host family. Please watch for further details in how you might help.

Gift Certificates

The band continues to sell $25 Kroger, Meijer, and Foodtown gift certificates (Foodtown certificates only while they are available.) Certificates are available at the Brechmacher home, 802 Touraine, at the usual schedule:
Wed.6:00-7:00 pm
Sat.10:00-1100 am

Each time you have earned $100 credit for the band (by purchasing $2000 in certificates), you will be awarded a bonus $25 gift certificate. (For students, a $25 credit to the Band Store is also offered.) This is a great opportunity to earn money for both band and yourself.

Uniform Fees

Many, many people have remembered to turn in the $50 uniform cleaning/repair/maintenance fee. If you have not, please remit to the band office, payable to BGHS Band Boosters. Yes, there may still be some checks floating around in backpacks somewhere - we have received two "well-rumpled" checks in the past two weeks - they were dated in early September!

Halloween Treats

Thank you to all the parents who donated candy for the Halloween goodie bags received by all students at the last home game.

Private Lessons

We always encourage students to investigate lessons with qualified private teachers in our area. Although our training as band directors includes study of each instrument, we surely acknowledge that students can benefit from time spent with a professional who specializes in just their instrument.

If you need a teacher recommendation, please let us know. As we approach the Solo & Ensemble season, we heartily encourage those who want to perform solos to begin study with a private teacher. The music used at HS Solo & Ensemble is more demanding than that used at the JH contests; the student will benefit greatly from the expert coaching of a specialist. The HS Solo & Ensemble contest is Saturday, February 2. If you already study with a university student/grad student, be sure they are aware of the date - the university is on break much later into January than we are! Have your solo selected well before the Holiday break (December 22 - January 6) because we will be mailing the applications during the vacation.

Band Quotes

“Sit down band will be a new, good experience for all the band members.” - R.S.

“I’ve met a lot of great friends that I would never have known if I wasn’t in band.” - J.W.

“Band has been a whole new experience for me, even though I have been playing for 5 years, I am still learning new things every day and meeting tons of interesting people.” - K.D.

“As a senior, I have had an excellent last season marching for the Bobcat band. I feel that the marching band gets better every year. It is an excellent way to close my career in band, and I am looking forward to what the concert season is going to bring us.” - J.T.

Band Store

We are pleased to be able to offer accessories to the band students through the "Band Store" in the band room. However, students need periodically to bring their accounts up to date! Currently, debts from August 1- October 10 are due; a list has been posted for the past month. Students with these old debts will have their grade cards held in the BGHS main office until the money is paid. If you choose to pay by check, please make them payable to: BGHS Band Boosters. (Most students only owe $3.00-8.00, these are not large sums!)

Pocket Schedules

Handy pocket sized copies of the band schedule have been available at the concession stand and band concert. If you have not picked one up contact Mr. Headley.

Instrument Care/Repair

Our representative from Rettig’s Music visits each week, usually on Friday afternoon. If you anticipate a repair need, be sure the student informs one of the directors so that it can be prepared to send. Frequently we can obtain a “loaner” if there is sufficient lead time. After marching season, MANY instruments need a little “TLC”!

TR's Corner

With the marching band season nearly complete, it has been very gratifying to observe the transition to "sit-down" band! Each group is establishing its separate and new identity, and we are all looking forward to a great "Holiday Concert" to kick-off the new season. In the meantime, some thoughts:

Holiday Parade

This community event has become tradition for the Bobcat Band. Perhaps more friends and neighbors see the marching Bobcats here than at any other event in our hometown! Given the overwhelming community support we have enjoyed over the years, -- especially for our "once-every-four-years" trip, --it is crucial that we be well-represented in the Holiday Parade. We begin roughly at 9 AM on November 17, and are usually finished by noon.

Step-up Instruments

This is a great time to consider a "step-up" instrument for student musicians whose development, progress, and interest warrant performing on a more "advanced" instrument. For some this could mean a wooden clarinet instead of plastic, an “open-holed” flute to replace a “closed-hole” model, or a “trigger” trombone verses their beginning models.

Some students will be needing “step-up” mouthpieces, mutes, and other accessories. We will let those students know as needed. Many of the clarinetists need their “high school” mouthpieces, a flyer will be prepared for them.

If you have any questions, we are happy to help you in your efforts to obtain an appropriate "step-up" instrument!

Uniforms for Concert Season

Bringing to your attention the clothing requirements for sit-down band! Please refer to the Bobcat Band Handbook for specific information. In particular, please be certain to have WHITE, LONG-SLEEVED dress shirts/blouses (NOT cream colored or 'off-white'!) and BLACK dress shoes. Ladies' skirts must be floor length, and of sufficient proportion to allow for correct playing positions.

Holiday Concert

Scheduled for December 2, the annual Holiday Band Concerts will be held at the Junior High Auditorium at 2 PM (bands in grades 5, 7, the HS Concert Band, and JazzCats Jazz Band) and 4 PM (bands in grades 6, 8, Freshman Band, and Symphonic Band). There is no charge for this concert; however, donations to support production expenses are appreciated. Please invite your family, friends, & neighbors to attend!

Solo & Ensemble

Annual OMEA-sponsored Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Events will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Eastwood H.S., Pemberville. This is a very important event in our yearly band activities, and one which students are strongly encouraged to participate. You will find enclosed with this newsletter sample forms and a checklist to begin preparations. Please make careful note of the deadlines.

Thanksgiving

Here's hoping you and yours enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving Vacation with family and friends, and not TOO much turkey! (Is that possible?)
