Bobcat Band Notes

January 2001
Vol. 4, No. 3

Band Store Debts

As the semester concludes, it is time for the band students to settle their "accounts" at the band store.  as of January 18, there is over $900.00 outstanding to the "band store", the majority in very small amounts.  Most students owe between $5.00-$15.00 for gloves, reeds, valve oil and other small accessories.  Please have your student pay promptly, so that they may receive their grade cards in a timely fashion; many students have been on the posted list since early in the school year.  When writing checks, please make them payable to "BGHS Band Boosters" as it is the Boosters who pay the supply bills to Rettig's or other vendors.

Calendar Items

We are entering the busiest part of the "concert season" for our bands.  Please be checking the band calendar for concert and contest dates.  The contracts you and your students signed in August are still valid for our band calendar events. Please notify the Directors in a timely manner if it is necessary for a student to be absent from a performance, as all three bands are currently hard at work preparing for the February and March performances.

According to the band handbook, usually personal illness or extenuating family circumstances would be reasons for an excused absence.&nbps; Any BGHS- sponsored organization conflicts can probably be worked out, if the Directors have the proper information soon enough. Please call your student's director if these situations apply: Mr. Headley 354-0100, ext. 328, Mrs. Hann 354-0100, ext. 332.

When you are making plans for spring activities, please note that the District Band Contest @ Southview High School is scheduled for March 9th or 10th. Since this is the first weekend of BGSU's spring break, it is important that you get it on your calendars now if you haven't already done so. That way it won't be a surprise for any students or parents.

Pre-contest evening rehearsals to be held at BGSH are anticipated to be:

  • Freshman Band - Tuesday, March 6 @ approx. 7:00-9:00 PM
  • Symphonic Band - Wednesday, March 7 @ approx. 8:00-10:00 PM
  • Concert Band - Thursday, March 8 @ approx. 7:00-9:00 PM

In addition, the winter band concert is scheduled for Sunday, Feb 25th. This means that students are expected to attend a rehearsal on the morning of Feb 24th. Again, please make your plans accordingly.

Sick in Paris?

Was your child ill during the Paris trip? During one of Mrs. Stoots's nursing visits in the morning, she left a new sweater (Christmas gift) in one of the hotel rooms. It is mostly gray with a blue, black and gray patterned stripe across the top. It has a zipper. If you or your child found such an item while packing or unpacking, please give call Mrs. Stoots @ 686-7111.

Bobcat Band Website

The Bobcat Band Boosters and the Band Directors would like to thank Jay Deutschman for providing and updating the band website. For those of you who are not aware, Jay has offered to leave the website up for several years, updating as necessary with pictures, newsletters and other important information. Be sure to visit often (particularly if you have misplaced your newsletter) and encourage your family and friends to watch the progress and activities of the band.

In addition, Jay will include your photos on the website. They need to be supplied to him via e-mail (jay@dacor.net) or on disc (CD, 100MB zip, diskette) in IBM format and should identify the event and/or day and caption for each picture. If you have photos that need to be scanned, you can give them to Peg McClanahan and she'll take care of this and get them to Jay.

Additionally, Jay has set up a band email address for those of you who would like to send messages to the Band Booster organization or to the directors. This address is bghsband@dacor.net

Please send Jay your thanks for donating all of these services to our band. For those of you who haven't yet visited it, the website address is http://home.dacor.net/BGHSband/

Pork-a-leans

Remember those delicious pork-a-leans that were served at the football games? There is still an opportunity to enjoy that great flavor. There are still a few boxes of frozen pork patties for sale. They are packaged in 20-quarter lb. patties/box and each box is only $15. Call Lisa or Scott Shulers (353-7475) to make arrangements to pick up your box(es). These are great to keep in the freezer and to have on hand when spring roles around and you want to use the grill.

Lots of Paris Trip Thanks…

  • From Randye Kreischer (Paris Trip Check-out Coordinator)
Thanks to everyone who made the Paris trip check-through go so well! This list of volunteers includes Barb and Gary Asmus, Rhoda Bennett, Jim Blackford, Beth and Dave Cook, Betty Desilvio, Ken Frisch, Laura Jorrey, Ilana Kennell, Roberta Leslie, Cindy and Steve Puffer, Deb Russell, Andrew and Gloria Schuman, Ken Shafer, Adrian Smith, and Chris Weaver.
  • From Lisa Shuler (Uniform Chairperson)…
Thanks to all who helped with the two days of preparation prior to packing uniforms and all those who helped on packing night. The uniforms survived the transatlantic flight in great shape and the students looked wonderful. In addition, several volunteers, including some students, pitched in and helped distribute and collect uniforms while in Paris. Their efforts are also appreciated. A special thanks to Randye Kreischer and Shelly Leestma for their diligent efforts.
  • From Chuck Bostdorff (Paris Trip Equipment Transportation Coordin-ator)…
Thank you to everyone who helped move the band equipment to and from the airport for the Paris trip. Without your help, the band would have been without instruments in Paris.
  • From all students who were ill in Paris and their families who were back at home…
Thanks to all the medical/nursing chaperones who willingly sacrificed their sleep and some of their daytime activities to take care of the needs of those who were sick.
  • From the Bobcat Band families who remained at home…
Thanks to Peg McClanahan for her wonderful commentary on the Paris Website. It helped everyone at home feel more connected to what was going on and reassured many anxious parents that all was going well.
  • From all travelers…
to Anne Kidder, Marcia Sproul, and Rick Brechmacher for making it so easy to purchase and distribute the Francs.

District Honors Band

Congratulations to the following high school band students who will be participating in the District Honors Festival @ the Stranahan Theatre:

  • Amanda Baerwaldt
  • Eric Boswell
  • Todd Burnap
  • Eric Hoover
  • Matt Kantorski
  • Aaron Kennell
  • Brian King
  • Peter McClanahan
  • Julie Thibault
  • Jason Thompson

The concert is free and always enjoyable so you might want to highlight March 4th on your calendars and plan to attend.

More Honors

Matt Kantorski has been chosen to participate in the All-State Honors Band and Aaron Kennell has been selected to play in the All- State Honors Orchestra at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) state conference on Feb 1-3 in Columbus. Each group consists of approximately 100 musicians chosen from throughout the state. The boys auditioned via tape last spring, were chosen in a "blind" audition and were sent music last fall. Both groups will practice two very long days, preparing challenging music during that short time and then perform on the last day of the conference. This year's All-State Band conductor is Dr. Barry Kopetz, an Ohio native and former assistant band director at Bowling Green State. Many parents may remember that Mrs. Kopetz was the general music teacher at Conneaut School for several years.

Bobcat Twirlers

If anyone knows of an underclass girl (current grades 8, 9, or 10) who is interested in auditioning for our Bobcat twirlers, have them contact Mrs. Hann, who will connect them with Mrs. Fitton, our twirling advisor. Tryouts are normally held in May.

Attention All Senior Parents…

Did you attend the awards banquet last year and bring a main dish that was made with kielbasa and potatoes and served in a crock pot? One of our band parents has requested that we search out the recipe for this dish. If you brought this dish, please contact Peg McClanahan @ 354-3451 or send the recipe to bghsband@dacor.net

Food Certificates

Don't forget that food certificates are still available and all money earned will now go into the band general fund. The more money we earn in this "painless" way, the less we have to earn through other fundraisers. Remember there is a reward for those purchasing the gift certificates as well. You will receive 5% credit on all certificates you purchase. Each time you have earned $100 credit for the band (by purchasing $2000 in certificates), you will be awarded a $25 gift certificate, or a $25 credit to the Band Store or a $25 credit toward your fall uniform fees. This is a great opportunity to help the band, as well as yourselves, so don't stop selling to your family and friends. Rick will continue to be available on Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00 PM and on Saturday mornings from 10:00-11:00 AM to sell certificates.

Cookie Dough Update

The "cookie dough committee" would like to thank all who participated in the cookie dough sale. The Junior High (much to Mr. Corrigan's delight), made a $4000 profit and the High School doubled the budgeted amount, with a profit of over $2300. The high school students earned an additional $6000 for their individual Paris accounts. A special thanks to the following people who helped set-up and distribute the cookie dough: Lora Finch, Rachel Weber, Barbara Moses, Carol Bateson, Ann Emmerich, Bev Blasiman, Deloris Swaisgood, Shirlee Bostdorff, Ruth Ann Shafer, Karla Hines, Carolee Damron, Ruth Schroeder, Carol Doyle, Shelly Reuhl, Thom Headley, Mike Leestma, Chuck Bostdorff, Al Stoots & Ron Gregorsock. We still have 1 tub of traditional cut-out cookie dough and 3 tubs of Rainbow Yummy M&M cookie dough left. They can be purchased for $10/tub by calling Dave or Beth Cook @ 352-3280!

Golf Domes Update

The goft dome fundraiser generated total profits of $5,913.82. This activity involved taking the two domes down in the spring and putting them back up this fall. A total of 60 students received funds toward their individual Paris accounts from this fundraiser. A big thank you to Rick Stein and Jerry Bruns for chairing this fundraiser and to the many volunteers who made this fundraiser possible.

Concession Stand Thanks

The concession stand committee would like to thank the following people for donating their time at each home game: Peg and Kaylene McClanahan for popping the popcorn, Mike Kreischer for setting up the tent, Chuck Bostdorff for picking up the ice, Bob Harmon for manning the tent, Steve and Cindy Puffer for grilling the pork-a-leans; and Rick Brechmacher, Peggy McClanahan and Ken Shafer for counting the money. Thanks also to all the parent volunteers who worked so hard (especially during the hot and buggy games!) to make this season the best yet! Thank you!!!
