Dec 28, 2000 @ 1:40 pm (Paris time) - from Peg McClanahan
At this point 2 of the 3 travel groups have arrived-about half of the total number of travelers.
The early morning group (with a connection through Chicago) arrived at 10:30 am, two hours behind
schedule due to a number of delays. They started off the trip to Detroit right on time, but had a
delay when one of the busses needed to be swapped for a new one near Perrysburg, due to mechanical
problems. The group arrived in plenty of time at the Detroit airport, however, because the flight
to Chicago was delayed more than an hour. By the time they arrived in Chicago, their 4 hour layover
time had been halved. They boarded the plane on schedule, but were delayed on the ground in the plane
for close to 2 ½ hours. Apparently there was a problem with the back up generator and a part needed to
be replaced. In spite of delays all flights were smooth, with little air turbulence.
The second group to leave Bowling Green arrived shortly after the first group even though they
left several hours later. This group flew through St. Louis and although they had only slight delays,
they felt their plane was inferior to the first flight. (They didn’t receive warm washcloths or have
individual movie screens.) In addition, their final landing was a bit rough.
We are currently awaiting the arrival of the 3rd group (the direct flight from Detroit) from the
airport. When they arrive we will have our orientation meeting and get our room assignments. The
travelers are getting restless, due to all the waiting, but most of them are too tired to be doing
much complaining.
The weather is partly cloudy and a bit chilly, but it feels refreshing after BG.
[addendum]
All 3 groups finally made it to our Paris Hotel safe and sound around dinner
time. Lots of delays and Travelers very tired (everyone will sleep well
tonight!). However, some instruments and 11 boxes of uniforms have yet to
arrive. We are all hopeful that everything will arrive in time for the first
performance (Jazz Band Friday evening at Hotel de Ville.) Friday we are all
off to visit Versailles and its famous Chateau.
Editor's note:
The band's schedule can be found on the Paris Trip page.
