With the holidays coming, luggage would make a great gift for any Scotland travelers. When choosing which suitcase to buy, make sure it follows the special rules for this trip. (International travel rules are often different than those for domestic flights.) The suitcase must not weigh more than 60 pounds when packed and the dimensions, when added together, must not exceed 62 inches--that is height plus width plus depth. If they do exceed the guidelines, you will be charged an "excess" fee by the airlines. Excess baggage charges are designed to be a deterrent - they are very, very high and bear no relation to real costs - beware.

Travelers will be allowed only one piece of 'checked' luggage. This applies to everyone in the group, including parents and add-on travelers. Even band members with an instrument and/or other equipment will be allowed only one 'checked' bag. Our group's musical instruments and/or equipment take up some of the usual baggage allowance. You will only be away for 8 days so judge accordingly. You will have to carry your suitcase in the airport and in the hotel, so don't take one that is too heavy or too big. The bags with wheels are most convenient, but remember that the wheel mechanism and handle add to the weight.

In addition to the suitcase you are allowed one piece of hand (or carry-on) luggage. In your carry-on luggage you should pack everything that you will need for the first twenty-four hours, in the event of lost luggage. As well as your essential traveling materials (passport, money, etc.), which you must carry, you may want to bring things to read and a few personal items to help you freshen up. You won't need to bring any food or drink. Remember that you cannot carry any sharp items, such as scissors, in your hand luggage. If you do they will be confiscated when you go through the security screening process, and you will not get them back. Don't make you hand luggage too big. It must be able to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead locker. These areas are not very large. There are strict rules about the size of carry-on luggage. If your item is too big the airline staff will not allow you to carry it on board the plane.
