Coupon Book Sale
This year's coupon book sale has gone very well. Last year, band members sold
over 900 books and this year we are well on track to meeting or improving on
that goal. Profits from the sale help pay for student awards, uniform purchases
and cleaning, instrument purchases and other programs.
The sale officially ended on September 12, 2003 and it is very important that all
students who have not yet turned in the money from the sale and any unsold books
do so immediately. We need to complete the tally and return all the unsold books
as soon as possible to avoid being charged for them. Additional coupon books are
still available for a short time and may be purchased by calling 419-352-7023.
Yearbooks
The 2002-2003 Band Yearbooks are in. If you pre-ordered a yearbook and haven't
picked it up, please call Judy Gardner, 419-353-1102. There are still a few
yearbooks available for $11.50 each. So, if you missed the opportunity to
pre-order in May, you can still have this book of band memories. Call Judy now
as they’re going fast!
Stadium Blankets
The Band Boosters are selling Stadium Blankets again this year. The cost is $35.
If you are interested in purchasing one contact Diane Wensink at 419-669-2538 or
stop by the west-end concession stand at home football games.
Just a Little Reminder ...
Every year, students are assigned a locker, equipped with a combination lock, in
which to store their band related items and equipment. This privilege removes the
burden from each student of carrying heavy instruments and equipment throughout the
high school. This privilege, however, comes with one responsibility: LOCKING THE
LOCKER! Students are required to keep their lockers locked to minimize the possibility
of damage or theft to personally owned or school owned instruments.
As concert season approaches, school owned instruments will be distributed to all who
play the following instruments: piccolo, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, contrabass
clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, horn, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion.
Each of these instruments are priced anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000. It costs the
band money to purchase, repair, and maintain each of these instruments. For this
reason alone, it is necessary to have instrument lockers locked at all times.
Whether the locker contains a school owned or student owned instrument, it is important
and incredibly simple to prevent outside damage to these instruments. We are only as
good as the instruments on which we play. Therefore, help maintain a standard of
excellence by fulfilling this simple responsibility.
"Assigned Positions" from TR
Aware that parents and students could use some clarification about "assigned positions"
in the Bobcat Marching Band, please note the following:
ASSIGNED POSITIONS. Marching Band positions will be assigned after evaluating students'
playing ability, marching ability, attitude, and attendance. This is usually decided
from the end of the first week of band camp through the opening of school.
In designing shows, directors make every effort to utilize the maximum number of qualified
students. We try to avoid "holes" (vacancies) in formations, which are detrimental to
group precision and appearance. "Shared" positions are used to provide an option for
filling "holes" in formations caused by illness, injury, or excused absences of regular
marchers. Two marchers are assigned to "share" a single position and will alternate
performing in that position throughout the fall season. "Shared" positions apply primarily
to field performances.
Whether assigned a regular or shared position, all members are subject to the same
attendance rules, and benefit from the same privileges (activities, travel, etc.).
Concert Season
During the upcoming concert season (November through May), members of the marching
band form three "sit-down" bands: the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, and the
Freshman Band.
The Symphonic Band is composed of more advanced student musicians who are capable
of performing challenging musical literature and maintaining a demanding schedule of
concerts, contests, and guest appearances annually. Band members who desire membership
in the Symphonic Band must demonstrate a high degree of technical proficiency on their
instrument, a mature tone quality consistent in all registers, demonstrated personal
integrity appropriate for studying more demanding musical literature, and a strong
ability to sight read.
The Concert Band is composed of students in grades 10-12 who are capable of performing
moderately difficult high school band music. The purpose of the ensemble is to
encourage further growth and development of individual music skills.
Freshman Band is composed of students in grades 9. These students will participate in
high school ensemble, in concerts and contests.
All three "sit-down" bands will follow the schedule as indicated on the Band Activity
Calendar.
Each student will be heard individually in auditions, scheduled during the marching
season. Members in grades 10-12 will be heard in after-school and evening audition
times; members in grade 9 will audition during the regular class period.
Auditions will consist of the following:
- Major Scales (all instruments); or selected rudiments for snare drum.
- Chromatic Scale for woodwinds; lip slurs for brass players.
- One or more excerpts selected by the directors which students prepare independently.
- A sight reading exam.
Grading
Grades in band will be determined by objective and subjective evaluation of the
following areas: musical growth, contribution, attitude, and attendance. Students
who fail to achieve a passing final grade will be ineligible to enroll in subsequent
years.
Special Notice
To members of the Bobcat Band who will graduate in the classes of 2005, 2006, 2007
and 2008,
Following a long-standing tradition to travel once every four years, it is anticipated
that the Bobcat Band will take a major trip during the school year 2004-2005. While a
trip destination is not yet known, efforts are beginning to form for students to fund
raise to defray expenses for such a trip. Individual trip accounts are kept for each
student, and special projects identified for this specific purpose.
Our first project: GIFT CERTIFICATES.
Effective September 3, 2003, 2% of proceeds from the sales of Gift Certificates may be
compiled for individual student trip accounts. This project is in effect through December
of 2003.
If, after starting the fund raising efforts, band members decide against participating
in a trip or otherwise choose to discontinue in the Bobcat Band, they may transfer their
accumulated funds to another student's trip account. (There is a 30-day time limit to
accomplish the transfer).
Untransferred funds will automatically revert to the Band Booster general fund. Please
contact Anne Deutschman at 419-354-3014 or jakgs@dacor.net
to arrange for such transfers, and for additional information.
Certificates are available outside the band room after all home football games and at the
Deutschman residence, 911 N. Wintergarden Rd, at the following scheduled times:
Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 PM
Saturdays, 10:00-11:00 AM
Don’t wait. Start earning money for your trip account today!
