District Band Competition
A “pitch” to ask all loyal Bobcat Band Parents to attend the performances for Ohio Music
Education Association District 1 Adjudicated Event, on Friday, March 15 and Saturday,
March 16, 2002 at Sylvania Southview High School Auditorium.
Performing for an empty auditorium is tough . . . there is an awkward silence that makes
performing feel too much like an “exercise”. With your warm reception, our kids can play
their finest in the quest to earn a bid to advance to state competition in May.
The performance phase of the festival is open to the public; the sight-reading phase is closed.
A reminder to ALL that recording devices, cameras, and other electronic devices are strictly
prohibited from the performing areas. Failure to comply with the rule could cause our school
to be disqualified from future OMEA adjudicated events.
As much as we all rely upon these task saving devices, they only detract from the performance
experience! It would also be greatly appreciated if phones and pagers were turned off for
ANY performance, although cameras and videos are certainly WELCOME at home concerts!!!
The Freshman Band performs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Symphonic Band at 8:50 p.m. on Friday,
and the Concert Band will perform on Saturday at 11:20 am.
SUPPORT YOUR BOBCAT BANDS AT DISTRICTS!!!
Band Board Members Needed
The Nominating Committee is looking for representatives of the Class of 2005 to join the
Executive Band Board. Four couples are needed to fill vacancies that will be created when
the senior class graduates. This is a three year commitment.
If you are currently parents of a freshman band member and are interested in joining, please
contact Mark & Melanie Mattingly at 419-352-0454 or any band board member.
College of Wooster Symphonic Band Visit!
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with the Wooster College Symphonic Band
visit on March 9 and 10. A very BIG thank you to the host families who have opened their
homes to the wandering musicians. Also, thank you to all band families for donating food,
your services on Saturday evening and your support in attending the concert.
We are very honored to host this fine band - which has 2 BGHS Bobcat alums this year -
Aaron House and Kevin McFillen!
Heads Up – Band Yearbook Coming!
Just a note to let everyone know that there is going to be a Band yearbook again this year.
Last year was our first year of doing this and it was a big success! This year’s is going
to be even better with your help. Please send me any pictures of your sons/daughters in
the band. I can use the pictures but cannot return them to you. Please send me your
duplicates!! You can mail them to me at 605 Flanders Ave, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402.
Also, the cost of the yearbook is the same as last year’s – $11.25 per yearbook.
You will be receiving a flyer in the next newsletter to be filled out and returned to me
no later than May 23, 2002 – the night of the Band Banquet.
We need a minimum order of 50 yearbooks. Last year we ordered 80 yearbooks!!! This year,
be looking for your flyer in the April newsletter and I’m looking forward to putting your
candid photos of your sons and/or daughters in the yearbook. Thank you in advance. Your
participation makes all the difference.
Sincerely, Melanie Mattingly
Band Banquet – May 23
I want to thank all of the people that have offered to help put together the 2002 Band
Banquet. Many hands make the work light. If you still have an interest in helping, please
call me at 419-352-0454.
Sincerely, Melanie Mattingly
Band Pictures
October 19th pictures should have all been distributed by now. There are some extra
sectional and group band pictures available in the Band Store at the price of $5.00 each.
Check with Ryan Brechmacher during store hours if you want to purchase any pictures.
Freshmen Solo & Ensemble
Most of the Freshmen Band will be involved with Solo & Ensemble on the alternative date
of Saturday, April 20, held at Gateway Middle School in Maumee. This will allow more time
to develop the ensembles, and will permit our spring student teachers the opportunity to
"coach" students through the entire process.
Private Lessons
We always encourage interested students in pursuing private study on their instruments!
There are so many benefits for our students, including personalized attention, expanded
experience on music specific to their instrument and the chance to "hear" and "model" a
professional on that instrument.
A partial list of teachers include: Dan Saygers, low brass, 419-352-6940; Teresa Hudson,
clarinet/saxophone 419-352-6226; Katie Jones, flute and Mike Jones, trumpet/horn 419-353-8624;
Creative Arts at BGSU is just starting a new semester; they may be reached at 419-372-8177.
Band Store Update
After marching season, our store is not quite as busy, but we are still selling dozens of
reeds and other accessories. The most current "debt list" is posted in 3-4 locations around
the band room. If your student(s) incurred debts from Oct. 5-Jan. 17, they are due now.
Please send checks, written to BGHS Band Boosters –OR- send cash in an envelope marked with
their name and amount. We are more than happy to provide the store as a convenience to our
students and families; we just need to stay "even" and not lose money!
How do you feel about Fundraisers ?
One way this organization has kept fundraisers to a minimum is by purchasing Kroger and
Meijer gift certificates. In the past six months there has only a very small dedicated
group purchasing certificates. Unfortunately, this is not enough to fulfill the projected
income from this “fundraiser”. If there is not more support in this area, it will need to
be phased out and other fundraising avenues will need to considered.
For those of you who shop at either Kroger or Meijer on a regular basis, why not do it with
a gift certificate? This helps out the band and does not cost you anything extra. You
purchase a $25 gift certificate for $25. Plus, you can get a bonus: each time you have
earned $100 credit for the band (by purchasing $2000 in certificates), you will be awarded
a bonus $25 gift certificate. (For students, a $25 credit to the Band Store is also offered.).
Certificates are available at the Brechmacher home, 802 Touraine, at the usual schedule:
| Wed. | 6:00-7:00 pm |
| Sat. | 10:00-1100 am |
Please come support this 'fundraiser'. This is how we can help to supply the band with the
additional equipment and supplies that are needed. (Besides, we really do not want to do any
more fundraisers either.)
