Band Banquet
With the end of the year coming up soon Band Banquet events are being put into place.
Please contact Melanie Mattingly at 419-352-0454 if you are interested in helping.
We need all the helpers we can get!
Band Pictures
October 19th pictures should have all been distributed by now.
There are some extra sectional and group band pictures available in the Band Store at the

any pictures.

Freshmen Solo & Ensemble Date
Most of the Freshmen Band will be involved with Solo & Ensemble on the alternative date of
Saturday, April 20, held at Gateway Middle School in Maumee. This will allow more time to
develop the ensembles, and will permit our spring student teachers the opportunity to "coach"
students through the entire process.

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee is looking for representatives of the Class of 2005 to join the
Executive Band Board. Four couples are needed to fill vacancies that will be created when
the senior class graduates. This is a three year commitment. If you are currently parents
of a freshman band member and are interested in joining, please contact Mark Mattingly at
419-352-0454 or any band board member.
Navy Band at BGSU
The world renowned Navy Band, based in Washington D.C. will be performing at Kobacker Hall
on Feb. 16. If your student isn't attending the "Coming Home" dance, or you need a "parents'
night out", the concert is free and open to the public, with a reserved ticket. The Sentinel
has been running order forms for the free tickets – you may order up to 4 per form. The
directors had the opportunity to hear this outstanding group in December when we attended the
Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic. If you, or your students have not had the chance
to hear one of the Washington-based military bands, you owe it to yourselves! The four "top"
service bands - Navy, Marines, Air Force and Army - are incredibly professional, on par with
the musicians in professional orchestras.
Band Store Update
After marching season, our store is not quite as busy, but we are still selling dozens of reeds
and other accessories. The most current "debt list" is posted in 3-4 locations around the band
room. If your student(s) incurred debts from Oct. 5-Jan. 17, they are due now. Please send
checks, written to BGHS Band Boosters –OR- send cash in an envelope marked with their name and
amount. The grade hold lists have been prepared and will go into effect when the cards are
mailed, around January 25. We are more than happy to provide the store as a convenience to our
students and families; we just need to stay "even" and not lose money!
College of Wooster Symphonic Band Visit!
We are hosting a first-ever visit from the College of Wooster Symphonic Band as they are
traveling west on their Spring Tour. Arriving the afternoon of Saturday, March 9. the band
will perform a public concert in our auditorium that evening. As the host school, we will
need to provide the following: Supper on Saturday evening (to be served at First Presbyterian
Church); host homes for approximately 90 college students (bed & breakfast); all of our students
and parents, to have an enthusiastic, supportive audience! Very soon, each band family will be
called and asked which of these opportunities we can expect your help in.
A committee is forming to decide the dinner menu and number of portions needed. For the
overnight accommodations, we will need about 50 homes, able to house 2 students (same gender)
who have already been paired by the college. When you receive the call, we will need to ask
potential hosts a few simple questions, as a courtesy to our guests. For instance: we are
interested in matching host families "with pets" to guests "without allergies"! We are very
honored to host this fine band - which has 2 BGHS Bobcat alums this year - Aaron House and
Kevin McFillen! Please consult your family calendars so we can show the Wooster "Scots" a
great BG welcome!
Private Lessons
We always encourage interested students in pursuing private study on their instruments! There
are so many benefits for our students, including personalized attention, expanded experience
on music specific to their instrument and the chance to "hear" and "model" a professional on
that instrument.
A partial list of teachers include: Dan Saygers, low brass, 419-352-6940; Teresa Hudson,
clarinet/saxophone 419-352-6226; Katie Jones, flute and Mike Jones, trumpet/horn 419-353-8624;
Creative Arts at BGSU is just starting a new semester; they may be reached at 419-372-8177.
All-State Band in Cincinnati
The state conference, for the OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) meets Feb. 7-9 in
Cincinnati this year. The OMEA sponsors four All-State groups, which are regarded as the
most prestigious of the honor groups.
This year we have three BGHS students involved, including Matt Kantorski, percussion, a
second year All-State Band student and Debbie Frater, an oboist in our band, who is a member
of the All-State Choir. The third student is violinist, Evan Leontis, who was selected for
the All-State Orchestra.
These students will travel to Cincinnati for 2-3 days of intense rehearsals, performing in
separate concerts on Friday and Saturday.
Gift Certificates
The band continues to sell $25 Kroger and Meijer gift certificates. Certificates are available
at the Brechmacher home, 802 Touraine, at the usual schedule:
| Wed. | 6:00-7:00 pm |
| Sat. | 10:00-11:00 am |
Each time you have earned $100 credit for the band (by purchasing $2000 in certificates), you
will be awarded a bonus $25 gift certificate. (For students, a $25 credit to the Band Store is
also offered.).
Pop Sale
The concession stand has some pop left from the football season. There is Pepsi, Diet Pepsi,
Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew, and Sierra Mist. The cost is 15 cents per can. You can buy any
quantity, while it lasts. Contact Scott Shuler at 419-353-7475, to arrange pick up times.
District Band Competition
All three “sit-down” bands will be performing at the district competition on either March
15 or 16. The competition will be held at Southview High School.
Congratulations
To Matt Kantorski for being one of three finalists in the country for the Air Force Band’s
featured soloist. He recently auditioned in Washington DC. Congratulations Matt!
