Bobcat Band Notes
October 2001
Vol 5, No 1

National Day of Prayer

Many of you were in attendance for the half time show on September 14. If you weren’t, you missed a very moving tribute to the victims and heroes of the incidents on September 11. We want to extent our gratitude to everyone who helped with this: the Anthony Wayne Marching Band, the students who wrote essays, the parents who brought and held flags, and especially Marsh and Marsh and Newlove Realty for supplying the smaller flags for everyone to hold.

Pancake Breakfast

We want to thank so many people for their help at the Chris Cakes Pancake Breakfast. Dan Moates, Ashley, Hannah Arthur, Sara Launder, Courtney Allen, Audrey, Elise, & Carol Mattingly.

Steve and Diane Wensink were a great help this year and we appreciate their willingness to take over this fundraiser next year. We appreciated everyone’s help in making this year’s “Chris Cakes” the most successful ever! We served a total of 750 people pancakes and grossed $1493.

Once again, thank you all for your help and participation, and remember to watch out for those flying pancakes during the Tractor Pull weekend.

Mark & Melanie Mattingly

Wooster College Band

March 9, 2002, the Wooster College Band will be in Bowling Green as part of their spring tour. They will be giving a concert that day at BGJH Auditorium We are looking for families that will be willing to help house the students for one night. There are approximately 90 students in the band. Please contact Mr. Headley if you will be able to accommodate one or more students.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Cookie Dough Sale begins October 11 at both the Junior High and the High School. Frozen dough will sell for $10.00 each. There are nine different flavors of dough available this year, with three new choices: Peanut Butter, Snickerdoodle, and Turtle Yummy. Profit for each band is $4.00 from each tub. Sales will continue for two weekends. Final sales are due on Monday, October 22. Parents will be in each band room on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, before band begins, to collect orders and money. Remember, this product is prepaid, with no money being collected at delivery time. Pick up of the dough will be Wednesday, November 14, after school in the high school band room. All dough needs to be picked up that day. Any questions can be directed to Shirlee Bostdorff @ 352-3381 for the High School and Beth Cook @ 352-3280 for the Junior High.

Gift Certificates

The band continues to sell Kroger, Meijer, and Foodtown gift certificates. This is a virtually painless fundraiser. You purchase a certificate for $25.00 and you have $25.00 to spend at one of the stores – painless! The band is able to purchase the certificates at 5% reduced cost, thereby earning money. Certificates are available at the Brechmacher home, 802 Touraine Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00 PM and on Saturday mornings from 10:00-11:00 AM . They are also available after football games in the band room.

There is an additional bonus with the certificates. Each time you have earned $100 credit for the band (by purchasing $2000 in certificates), you will be awarded a bonus $25 gift certificate. (For students a $25 credit to the Band Store is also offered.) This is a great opportunity to earn money for both the band and yourself.

Thanks

A very big thank you to all the moms who helped with fitting uniforms and/or doing alterations. The band would not look as great as it does without all your efforts.

Also, the raincoats were laundered this year (as all returning band members probably very gladly noticed.) Thanks go to Mike and Shelly Leestma for hauling all 488 pounds of raincoats to the laundry. And an additional thank you goes to the parents who helped with rainproofing them.

From Mr. Headley

We are delighted to have had such a wonderful start to the year of Bobcat Band activities! THANKS! to all who have contributed to our success this fall!

LOOKING AHEAD TO CONCERT BAND SEASON!

Auditions

During the concert band season (November through May), members of the marching band form three "sit-down" bands: Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Freshman Band.

Symphonic Band is composed of more advanced student musicians who are capable of performing challenging musical literature and maintaining a demanding schedule of concerts, contests, and guest appearances annually.

Concert Band is composed those upperclassmen who need further refinement in their musical skills. The schedule of commitments for Symphonic Band and Concert Band are similar, insofar as it pertains to concerts and contests.

Membership and seating assignments in the Symphonic and Concert Bands is determined by audition. Band members who desire membership in Symphonic Band must demonstrate a high degree of technical proficiency on their instrument, a mature tone quality consistent in all registers, demonstrate personal maturity appropriate for rehearsing more demanding musical literature, and a strong ability to sight-read.

Auditions are held starting in October in order to determine each student's strengths/weaknesses. Roughly 1-2 weeks prior to each 'instrument's' scheduled audition date, students will receive specific written instructions about audition requirements, plus a musical selection to prepare "on their own". Each audition takes approx. 20 minutes. Students are to sign-up for an "after-school" or "evening" audition time.

Seating assignments for Freshman Band are determined by sight-reading exams administered during the Freshman Band period following the football season.

Listening to all concert band members takes a HUGE amount of time! However, we are committed to this process. It gives us a very accurate representation of each student's progress and abilities so that "band" and "part" assignments are the most appropriate for each student.

Encourage your daughter/son to prepare carefully for these auditions, and make certain that his/her instrument is in "good repair!" It is very important that we hear each student at his/her BEST!

Concert Uniforms

Ladies: ankle/floor length black skirt; white dressy blouse; dark hose, black dress shoes

Gents: black dress slacks, white dress shirt, black socks, black dress shoes, black bow tie, (red jacket issued by school).

Coupon Books

The sales started off pretty slow during the first week and then stayed steady until the last week. The freshman class did an outstanding job selling over $4400 worth of books. Several of the freshmen sold all 10 of their books causing a 7-way tie for second prize the third week of sales. After some coaxing, almost all of the books have been turned in. If you still have outstanding books, please contact me at 352-8124. It was nice to see that the late returned books brought in over $1000 more in sales. The rough total shows that we sold over $11,500 in books making our profit about $5750. This figures out to an average of almost four books sold per band member.

A BIG THANKS to the students AND parents that made this fundraiser work.

Mike Leestma
